The gospel literally means “good news”. In this context, it is the good news that Jesus came to die and take the place of humanity for their sins. The good news is that humanity is no longer separated from God, as Jesus now acts as the way for humanity to come to God. Jesus has fulfilled the old covenant, and now the new covenant has been established. The word “gospel” also refers to the four books that chronicle Jesus’ life, teachings and acts. Those are the first four books of the New Testament: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. “Gospel”, meaning the Christian message, has now become synonymous with the books, as they contain the accounts of the story where the message comes from. Ultimately, the gospel is a hopeful message for mankind, that they are not eternally doomed or destined for ruin. Obedience and faithfulness in Jesus is readily available, as long as humanity receives the message.
