1. The New Testament gives us many ways to understand the significance of Jesus' death and resurrection. Choose one model of atonement that you have not used before. Summarize how you could share the gospel on campus using that model.

The Exemplary model of atonement is such that Jesus' death has both a redemptive and transformative effect on believers. Many new believers who are delivered from obvious paths to hell have no difficulty in turning from their old ways in order to live a life that is close to that of Jesus'. However, there is a large population of new believers who don't fully grasp the restorative nature of Jesus' death and resurrection. Because of this they travel a difficult or rather lengthy road to repentance of sins that they see as normality. The Exemplary model can be used to educate new believers on the transformative process of atonement. Jesus' death is an example for Christians to emulate. Just as Jesus died with humility, we are to live our lives in humility. Jesus' self-giving death is an example for how husbands are to love their wives. The topic has endless comparative possibilities with our own lives, and therefore, we can use this model to educate believers on the importance of the transformative aspect of atonement.

2. Is it possible to overemphasize the deity of Christ at the expense of his humanity?

It's definitely possible to overemphasize the deity of Christ, but we should beware the danger of minimizing it as well. In order to understand the sacrifice of atonement, it's important to note the humanity of Jesus Christ. Without Christ's humanity, atonement is reduced to the act of an almighty God without true consequence. If Jesus was only fully God when He died on the cross, his actions are reduced to something much less impactful than that of a God who chose to be man in order to die like men. Since God is beyond the limitations of man, a human death is inconsequential for Him unless He becomes fully man. It's important that we keep humanity at the an equal with the deity of Christ while speaking about His time on Earth. As we are to be like Christ, the only way be like Him is to have a great example to follow. We cannot follow the example of one who is infinitely beyond our capabilities. Christ was given to us not only as a sacrifice, but as a physical guide to follow. Without him, we'd be grasping at the Holy Spirit for constant answers to questions that are fulfilled through Jesus Christ.

I appreciate the way you responded to the question of the possibility of overemphasizing the deity of Christ. This is in part because I agree with you but I also think you do an excellent job of detailing why Christ needed to be human, why we needed him to be human in order to be an exemplar for us. You explain that his split nature is what allows him to not only die on the cross and take our sin while also providing an example for us in how to live. I think even beyond having an example through Jesus, he is also owed our lives because of the fact that he fully God and thus fully deserving of worship.
